about

Hi Bandcampers,

Here's a record from 1999 that I'm finally letting go into the stratosphere. Sometimes I think this is two records mashed together, but that's just the way it went sometimes in the longplay album days. Some very favourite songs are in here, hope you enjoy this crate dig.

ps my husband is saying that I should mention that this record is very LoudQuietLoud. with lots of long silences. another 90s signature!

credits

released October 1, 1999

Veda Hille plays tenor guitar, piano, organ, voice, accordion and banjo.
Martin Walton plays bass and pedal steel.
Ford Pier plays electric guitar, all manner of organs, french horn, nylon string guitar, synthesizer, bass on Williamsburg and drums on 3xthin.
June Mirochnick plays drums, tambourine, toy piano, real piano on Clumbsy, voice, small things hit with sticks, keyboard on Ponybride and guitar on 3xthin.
Peggy Lee plays cello.
Eric Napier plays euphonium.

Kinnie Starr sings on Ponybride.
Alex Varty plays the glassy guitar on Veterans and the right side of the guitar argument on Killzone!.
Sheila McDonald plays first violin.
Marie Claude Brunet plays viola.
Paula Wise plays violin.
Martin Tielli sings a note somewhere.

The songs were arranged by the players. The string quartet and horn parts were written by Ford. Keiron Simons graciously sponsored the string quartet session.

Manipulated sounds and loops recorded and messed with by Christof Migone and Veda at Avatar (Quebec City) and Christof's place (NYC). Loopy finessing by David Travers-Smith (Toronto). Band tracks recorded by Marc L'Esperance at the House of the Roses (Bowen Island) with overdubs at Lemonloaf (Burnaby). Batterie was recorded by Veda on a 4 track on Hornby Island. The string quartet was recorded at Mushroom Studios (Vancouver), assisted by the lovely Pete Wonsiak. Mixed at Lemonloaf by Mark with Veda, Ford and June. Assembled by David with Christof and Veda. Mastered by Jeff Elliot at Reaction (Toronto).

Art by Geoffrey Farmer.
Visual assemblage and typography by Brian Morgan at SKMB Design (Vancouver).

The song Born Lucky contains phrases borrowed from Franz Boas' 1895 book The Indian Myths and Legends from the North Pacific Coast of America, which I found in the Hornby Island Library and read on the unceded territories of the K'ómoks First Nation. This album also contains phrases borrowed from Haruki Murakami, Justin Kellam, Stephanie Aitken, David Byrne, and Don Pendleton.

You do not live in this world alone. There's also Justin, Saoirse, Steph & Frances, Char and Family Gossen, Keiron, Queen Emily, Kevin Rose, Katrina Rose, all the Little Roses, Andrew Feldmar, the REd Square Collective, Kate Mangan, all gracious hosts, Laurie Mercer, Collar and No Collar, Rosanna & Lucas Hille, Margaret Newton, Ralph Alphonso, Volker Steppat, Petra Hanisch, the Canada Council, FACTOR, the Hignett-Fengers, Dave McMurran, Les and his van, Eric and his van, Domi and her van, Hank, Allan, Kevin, Sarah, Suzie, Kinnie, Geoffrey, Brian, Christof, dts, Peggy, Marc, and Martin, Ford and June.
